A manufacturing company with a large workforce assembled its payroll by hand, in a spreadsheet, every week. I built a web system used from a phone on the plant floor. Supervisors log production and schedules, and pay is calculated from that data. Reports and staff management live in the same place.
The challenge
The client is a manufacturing company that calculated pay with a spreadsheet and the memory of whoever maintained it. That was enough while the team was small. As the workforce grew, assembling payroll by hand ate hours every week.
The work was repetitive and demanding at the same time. Someone had to read each person’s production and schedule records to arrive at an amount. The errors were not carelessness: they are what you get when a person spends hours doing what a machine does in seconds.
The solution
I built one web system, opened from a phone on the plant floor and from a computer in the office. Supervisors log production and schedules as they happen. Reports and staff management live in the same application. Payroll calculates itself from those records. The data goes in once and nobody copies it again.
What mattered was where the number gets written down. It used to travel: someone jotted it on a slip, the slip reached the office, and only then was payroll put together. Errors crept in along the way. Now the supervisor writes it down on the plant floor, right then, looking at the work. Every amount stays tied to its record, so you can always see where it came from.
Results
Payroll is no longer put together by hand. It comes out of what was logged on the plant floor, and the hours that used to go into it are free for something else. Everything stays saved too: production and payments in one place, week by week. They can go back and compare when output was higher, without digging through old paperwork.
